Rosslyn bike kiosk located

The Ode Street Tribune's crack investigative team has located the missing Rosslyn bike kiosk. It's been relocated to Barcroft Park in South Arlington. Bring back the Rosslyn bike kiosk!

Shakespeare in Virginia

Street signs from an Arlington neighbor, the McLean Hamlet. Of course, our own Ode Street was named after the famous poem to a Grecian urn.   And our Ode Street intersects with Fort Myer Dr. which was originally the driveway for Fort Myer. Westmoreland Terrace Condos also has a highly distinguished name.

celebrating hope with Obama

In the lobby of the National Museum of African Art, reflections from the windows add another element to Papisco Kudzi's mixed media work.

This kanga cloth from Tanzania is inscribed in Swahili, "Upendo Na Amani Ametujalia Mungu" (God Has Blessed Us With Peace and Love).

bikes were the best way

Thanks, WABA!

watch out for ice

Runoff from the construction site at the corner of Rhodes and 14'th St (just across the bridge over Rt. 50) creates an ice hazard. It was broken up this morning, but might reform.

On Arlington Blvd. between Ft. Myer Dr. and Nash St., there's a major ice hazard. It's apparently from excess drainage from the pipes at the base of the concrete wall. Fortunately, it's well marked.

Alex Hassan, master of novelty piano

One of the most amazing pianists in the world lives right nearby in Falls Church, Virginia. Alex Hassan has spent more than thirty years collecting, studying, arranging, and playing piano music from the 1920s and 1930s. His specialty is the spectacular pyrotechnics of what's known as novelty piano -- beautiful melodies that move through incredible embellishments.

You can hear Alex Hassan play this coming Tuesday, January 20, at 6pm at the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center. The performance is free, and no tickets are required. If you don't have political connections or a lot of money, you aren't going to find a better special event to celebrate inauguration day.

Alex also occasionally gives performance in the area. The above video includes excerpts from his performance on November 28, 2008, in the Bonita Lestina Performance Series at Old Town Hall, City of Fairfax, Virginia. CDs of Alex's music are available through Shellwood Productions.

A special thanks to J.M. for inspiring and helping with the video.

stamp Rosslyn on every car

Check out the four candidates for the 2009-2010 Arlington County car decal image and then vote for your favorite. Voting is open to Arlington residents and is ongoing until January 23.

Three image candidates are from Rosslyn -- a Key Bridge image, an Iwo Jima image, and an image of the Rosslyn skyline. The fourth image shows the guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier. Arlington students created these beautiful images.

I voted for the Key Bridge image despite its cheezy "come sail away" caption. Sorry, the radio drummed "come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me" into my head and I can't get it out. That song was from 1978. Does any current Arlington student actually listen to Styx? Must have been the parents. Kids, help educate your parents, play more of your music, louder, around your home.

looking for a Westmoreland unit to buy

From the Ode Street Tribune mailbag:
Douglas: I use to rent one of the condos at 1309 N. Ode St in the late 90's. I am interested if you have a listing of any units for sale as I may be returning to the area and I enjoyed that area and its charm and how close it is to everything. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Not sure if the units are listed in your Tribune so I thought I would ask.

Thanks
Rob

meet a camel

Chewy the Epiphany Camel is making a brief appearance at the Church of the Covenant on Military Road in Arlington. You don't see camels around here very often. Unfortunately, Sunday morning I'll be freezing my feet off (gotta get some Sidi Toasters) on the Squadra Coppi ride. Hope some other credible news source covers this interesting event.
