Marine Corps beats hurricane for marathon teardown
Two races occurred this past Sunday. The first was the people's marathon, the Marine Corps Marathon. The second was the race to tear down marathon facilities before hurricane Sandy hit Sunday night. Marine Corps soldiers set up the marathon and served participants during the marathon. With the hurricane coming within hours after the end of the marathon, they had no rest and great time pressure for the teardown. Despite these difficult circumstances, the Marine Corps soundly beat Hurricane Sandy for the Marine Corps Marathon teardown. Oorah!
The Marine Corps does difficult and dangerous jobs. For their service everyone should be grateful. If the Marine Corps worked like a portable rent-a-john company, tent shards would be hanging from buildings in Rosslyn, blown over tables would be blocking Rt. 50, and the ground would be electrified with broken sound and communication equipment.

Marine Corps marathoners thrilled to arrive in Rosslyn
As the above video documents, runners in today's Marine Corps Marathon were thrilled to arrive in Rosslyn. They overcame leg clamps, back aches, knee injuries, and many other forms of pain and agony to get to Rosslyn. Whether you live here, run a marathon to get here, or arrive in any other way, everyone is welcomed in Rosslyn.
The weather emergency may give some Marine Corps Marathon runners and supporters an opportunity to stay in Rosslyn longer than they had previously planned. Everyone should look for ways to make their visit to Rosslyn as enjoyable as usual. Visitors with unexpectedly extended visits are welcomed to leave any special requests in the comments to this post. The Ode Street Tribune will do what it can to help.

bike not abandoned
Local members of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Bikes have been concerned about a bike that appears neglected and forlorn along a road in Rosslyn. Careful observation by an Ode Street Tribune Investigative Task Force has revealed that the bike is not abandoned. One night, a young man rode this bike down the street at night. He had no lights on and was not wearing a helmet. He was risking his life to give his bike some exercise. That's not necessary. Always wear a helmet when riding a bike, and always use lights at night.

get ready for the Marine Corps Marathon
Rosslyn's Marine Corps Marathon will start this Sunday at 8am. After running 26.2 miles, about 30,000 runners will be thrilled to come to Rosslyn, as are many visitors to Rosslyn all year long.
Traveling around Rosslyn with an inhuman-powered vehicle will be very difficult on Sunday before 3pm. Here's a list of the road closures. Stay in Rosslyn and enjoy watching the huge Marine Corps Marathon field racing to get to Rosslyn.
Update: Here's a map of road closures and detours in Rosslyn.

Rosslyn SUPERNOVA coverage
Check out the SUPERNOVA facebook page for coverage of the performance art in Rosslyn this past week. Here's a collection of photos of the events.
The Ode Street Tribune intended to cover this Thursday's performance, and, more importantly, participate in it. However, a crushing journalistic workload prevented the Tribune's journalist from attending and getting some news stories written for free. Don't let the burden of work prevent you from enjoying the benefits of life in Rosslyn.

Santa Fe Cafe last day Sat. Oct. 27
Rosslyn's legendary Santa Fe Café will serve its last meal on Saturday night, Oct. 27. All that remains is just a weekend and a week for you to enjoy Santa Fe Café's authentic New Mexican cuisine.
Santa Fe Café owner, manager, and substitute head cook Kip Laramie has made extraordinary contributions to the Rosslyn neighborhood. Santa Fe Café may close, but it will not be forgotten.

potential Rosslyn boathouse site
Rosslyn's idyllic Potomac shoreline will provide a spectacular location for a new boathouse for non-motorized boats. The period for comments on alternative boathouse sites closed at the end of September. The next step is for the National Park Service to select formally the best alternative, which is obviously the Rosslyn site.
A more complicated issue is how to ensure that the many persons coming to Rosslyn from Georgetown will be able to enjoy all that Rosslyn has to offer. A pedestrian overpass connecting downtown Rosslyn to the riverfront would help to support circulation through Gateway Park, downtown Rosslyn, Roosevelt Island, and the boathouse.
Congressman Jim Moran played a key role in securing funding for a pedestrian/bike overpass connecting neighborhoods and Wolftrap facilities separated by Rt. 66. Rosslyn needs a similar pedestrian/bike overpass connecting downtown Rosslyn to the Potomac shoreline. At the recent candidates' forum, Congressman Moran stated that the elimination of earmarks makes it much harder to get funding for worthy projects like a Rosslyn pedestrian overpass to the Potomac. A member of the audience suggested that money might be found in National Park Service funding for the boathouse. But if that funding only builds a pedestrian overpass serving boathouse facilities or connecting to Gateway Park, it will re-enforce the urban/rural divide in Rosslyn. The National Park Service should think beyond the boathouse to Roosevelt Island and downtown Rosslyn.

yarn bomb at Artisphere
Through its network of local informers, the Ode Street Tribune has learned that a yarn bomb is being fabricated in Artisphere. Guerilla activists reportedly will be meeting at Artisphere on Wednesday evenings from 6-9pm. The Tribune's Electronic Intelligence-Gathering Bureau has intercepted the following recruiting communication:
Rest assured that the Ode Street Tribune will thoroughly investigate this matter in coming weeks.
Drop in on any or all of the free Wednesday evening stitch sessions to help create a yarn bomb temporary public art project that will bring color and art to Rosslyn! We’ll help you get started with materials, instruction and inspiration. Meet other knitters and crocheters while sharing your creativity for a top secret, guerilla-style, collaborative installation early next year! Experienced stitchers are welcome to bring their own needles and hooks.Close reading of this missive indicates skulduggery. Rosslyn is already colorful and full of art. The claim that this plot "will bring color and art to Rosslyn!" suggests the work of foreign agents.
Rest assured that the Ode Street Tribune will thoroughly investigate this matter in coming weeks.

new Rosslyn bikeshare station
A new Capital Bikeshare station has been installed in Rosslyn on N. Queen St., just south of Arlington Blvd. The station is right in front of the Marbella Apartments and unquestionably raises the value of those apartments.
Persons living along N. Meade St. near Rosslyn's Iwo Jima Memorial remain deprived of a bikeshare station. Persons wishing to visit this important site arrive on numerous, noisy, polluting tour buses. Wouldn't the neighborhood prefer these visitors to arrive on quiet, clean Capital Bikeshare bikes?

vacation in Hawaii, or in Rosslyn?
A correspondent vacationing in Hawaii recently sent the Ode Street Tribune a photo of a flower from Hawaii (see above). A very similar flower is growing right now right here in Rosslyn (see below). Given Rosslyn's beauty and excitement, why vacation in Hawaii when you could vacation in Rosslyn?
To answer this baffling question, the Ode Street Tribune's Investigative Reporting Bureau is conducting a poll. Please contribute to the advancement of knowledge by participating in the poll below.

performance art, fashion, and proper flag disposal
The SUPERNOVA performance art festival will explode in Rosslyn this coming June. Related arts happenings will be happening much sooner. Next week, on Tuesday, Oct. 16, look for poets, comedians, actors, and you performing in Rosslyn's Crandall Mackey Park. On Wednesday, Oct. 17, dancers will be popping up in Crandall Mackey Park and elsewhere. And on Thursday, Oct. 18, four writers will be stationed in the Central Space plaza across from the Rosslyn metro. The writers will accept requests to write a "love letter, poem, letter to your boss, or anything you want." The Ode Street Tribune's journalist plans to ask each writer to write a week's worth of stories for the Tribune. That adds up to a well-deserved month's vacation for the Tribune's dedicated and hard-working journalist.
Drawing upon Rosslyn's increasingly fashionable reputation, NOVA Fashion Week is at Artisphere this Thursday through Saturday. Thursday's night fashion show will be presented by Thierry Couture. Friday night is Matthew Donovan & Periwinkle, and Saturday night is Studio D’Maxsi. Ticket prices start at $25. That's cheap relative to the price of high fashion.
In patriotic Rosslyn, even more important than you looking good is having your American flag look good. The American flag doesn't change with fashion. But, like all of us, flags get old. Boy Scout Troop 505, based out of Mount Olive Baptist Church, will be collecting unserviceable American flags at Arlington's E-Care household material disposal and recycling event this Saturday, October 13th from 8:30am to noon at the Thomas Jefferson Middle School, 125 S. Old Glebe Rd. Together with American Legion Post 139, Troop 505 will respectfully retire and dispose of all collected flags with a formal and proper ceremony in late October.
Rosslyn is about living with flair. Just walk around Rosslyn, keep your eyes open and your imagination fertile, and you will experience it.

Rosslyn candidates' night
At this Thursday night's Radnor/Ft. Myer Heights Civic Association (RAFOM) meeting, candidates for the upcoming elections discussed the issues and answered questions. The candidates' names below link to their websites, and the video link shows the candidate's opening statement, rebuttal, and closing statement at the RAFOM meeting.
Presidential and senatorial candidates did not attend this important meeting. Via its network of local informers, the Ode Street Tribune learned last week that the presidential candidates would not be present. The Tribune emailed the Barack Obama and Mitt Romney campaigns to find out why. Neither campaign responded to the Tribune's query. America is in trouble.
A broad-based, grass-roots political revival is the solution. Get involved!

celebrating vegetables: broccoli & asparagus
Broccoli and asparagus naturally complement each other. These versatile vegetables can be eaten raw or cooked. By cooking them, you can easily eat more of them. Eating asparagus raw, on the other hand, keeps it stiffer and lessens effects on subsequent natural bodily functioning.
Do not boil these or any other vegetables. Boiling vegetables is cruel and causes nutrients to leach out.
Moist heat makes for tasty broccoli and asparagus. All you need are standard bowls and plates. Wash the vegetables first and don't let them dry. For broccoli, put it in a cereal bowl, put a plate on top to cover the bowl, and put that combo in the microwave for 1.5 minutes. Asparagus can be similarly steam-cooked between two plates for 1 minute. Make sure to take the vegetables out of the plate apparatus (which will be hot; handle with cooking gloves) promptly or the vegetables will keep cooking.
Having broccoli and asparagus helps to bring about satisfaction and well-being. Try it today!

clouds silence sun boxes
With time, clouds pass. Today in Rosslyn's Central Space, sun and clouds played Craig Colorusso's Sun Boxes. The sun boxes have a solar panel on top, and a speaker on the bottom. Each sun box plays a different note. The intensity of the sunlight determines the loudness of the note. If you approach a sun box in the wrong way, your shadow will quiet it. But if you reorient yourself generously toward the sun, the sun box will start to sing with the chorus of other sun boxes.
Rosslyn is known for its distinctive sonic atmosphere. Many persons nonetheless fail to listen carefully to all the sounds of Rosslyn. Colorusso's Sun Boxes added another layer of sound to Rosslyn. The sun boxes also encouraged the bustling pedestrian traffic in downtown Rosslyn to slow down and listen to the world.
The Rosslyn Business Improvement District sponsored this wonderful art instillation, which was part of Artisphere's Second Anniversary Celebration. If you missed visiting Colorusso's Sun Boxes, you can get a sense for what they were like from the video below. Much more enjoyable is being personally present in Rosslyn.

Rosslyn on front lines of contemporary art
Rosslyn continues to draw itself onto the front lines of contemporary art with Jassie Rios and Renee van der Stelt's collaborative installation, Drawing the Found Line, now showing in Artisphere's WIP Gallery. Rios and van der Stelt's work uses sound and movement to inspire conceptually drawing lines. Their work subtly retraces the roar and rush of the orange and blue lines pulling into Rosslyn.
Just like Beyond the Parking Lot, this exhibit plays well with Pattee Hipschen's Rural Beauty, A Visual Diary of the American Landscape, now showing in Artisphere's Mezz Gallery. Across the Mezz Gallery's long wall, Hipschen's paintings are arranged with a pulsating rhythm. Groups of small paintings oscillate with larger works in the line of the wall. Walk the Mezz Gallery looking at the arrangement of the paintings to appreciate this brilliant level of Hipschen's exhibit.

Arlington Fun Ride this Saturday
Phoenix Bikes is hosting a scenic, family-friendly 17-mile bike ride this Saturday morning. This Arlington Fun Ride includes Rosslyn's bucolic vista of the Potomac River via the Mt. Vernon trail and features a rest stop with coffee, water, and snacks in Rosslyn's Gateway Park. The entry fee for the ride is a $5 for an individual, $15 for a family, and $30 for a team/group. You'll get a t-shirt if you are among the first 200 registrants.
If you have kids and don't ride your bike much, this is a particular good event to do. The event runs from 8am to noon, and includes fun children's activities at the Phoenix Bikes start/finish point. If you ride slow enough, you should be able to get about 3 hours of supervised, kid-pleasing child entertainment for a mere $15 family registration fee. That's a great deal for you and your kids. Sign up here.
If prefer sadomasochistic fun, you could do instead the 55-mile, rip-your-legs-off Lanterne Rouge / Whole Wheel Velo Club ride. This ride leaves about 9:10am Saturday morning from Java Shack, a local, independently owned coffeehouse in the Courthouse area of Rosslyn. Ride survivors bleed into Java Shack about 12:30pm.
If either of these fun events appeals to you, or neither, you should consider supporting Phoenix Bikes. Phoenix Bikes gives local kids a hands-on experience of bike repair and small-business operation. Phoenix Bikes is particularly important for kids who are socially marginalized and facing failure in the traditional educational system.
Despite difficult economic circumstances, the Ode Street Tribune's Editorial Board has decided to donate $100 to Phoenix Bikes. To fund this donation, the Editorial Board is cutting the weekly salary of the Tribune's journalist by $2 per week (the extra $4 raised with go to the Board's daily status meeting coffee fund). Consider some change in your budget to fund a worthwhile donation to Phoenix Bikes.
