starving journalist, infuriated by management, quits Tribune

Based on an investigation by the Ode Street Tribune's journalist, the publisher of the Tribune recently donated $100 of his own personal money to support the Artisphere matching-grant fundraiser.  The Artsphere matching-grant fundraiser ends this Monday, June 30th.  If you haven't donated yet, you should donate right now to support this great Rosslyn institution.

The publisher's donation infuriated the Tribune's journalist.  The Tribune's journalist has never received a raise.  He begs leftover food from the A-SPAN homeless bagged meal distribution at Rosslyn's Gateway Park.  The journalist technically isn't homeless only because he is allowed to sleep in his office at the Tribune's corporate headquarters. This past Wednesday, the journalist quit his job and declared that he will start a more promising career in the fast-food service industry.

The departure of the Tribune's journalist pleased the publisher immensely.  He had been looking for an opportunity to hire his boyhood friend Anse Bundren.  Mr. Bundren wrote this past Thursday's news.  The impression analytics report from the Tribune's new media distribution department indicated that Mr. Bundren's writing bombed.  Tribune readers were bewildered and nonplussed.  The publisher has thus decided to promote Mr. Bundren to Sr. News Assistant Editor.

Publication of the Tribune will be temporarily suspended as it seeks to hire a new journalist.  Energetic persons who want to make the world better through exciting local journalism are encouraged to consider this opportunity.

Rt. 50 digital sign ruining Rosslyn

No luck living in a place where's a 'lectronic sign is always a-telling folk to drive right thro.  "Get up and move, then."  I say there's no use in it, when 'lectronic signs are a-sprouting like fake suns across the land.  Ain't worth gaping at a sign if it's done set up to change.  But thar it is, glaring at me. Telling me to move on through.  Lot of folks don't like things changing around in Rosslyn.  Wouldn't have happened except for that 'lectronic sign.

Rosslyn Iwo Jima bikeshare station highly popular

The new Capitol bikeshare station in front of Rosslyn's Iwo Jima memorial has already become hugely popular.  This morning, all but three of the nineteen bikes had been taken out.  The new bikeshare station sits right on the Virginia-Rosslyn-Washington superhighway for human-powered traffic.  With this bikeshare station, Rosslyn has further cemented its position as the leading bike transportation hub in the region.

better access to Rosslyn from the west

The new 10th St. ramp to Rt. 50 is new helping motorists to get into Rosslyn more easily.  But don't try this ramp on your bike.  It merges traffic into the center of Rt. 50.  The trails along Rt. 50 are progressing rapidly and will soon be bringing non-motorized traffic smoothly into Rosslyn.

For the last two weeks, construction crews have been hard at work building a concrete platform for a new Capital Bikeshare bike station in front of Rosslyn Vista Park.  This park features the world-famous Iwo Jima Memorial and the Netherlands carillon.  It's also a favorite waterless beach during the summer.  Soon everyone will be able to get right to Rosslyn Vista Park on a Capital Bikeshare bike.

Rosslyn's Arlington National Cemetery celebrates 150th anniversary

Rosslyn's Arlington National Cemetery was established on June 15, 1864.  The 150th anniversary of this hallowed ground will be celebrated with two events at the cemetery:
June 13 rescheduled to Sunday, June 15: "Arlington at 150," an hour-long live military show featuring musical performances by "The President's Own," U.S. Marine Band and a Joint Chorus made up of singers from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force and a wreath ceremony and historical vignettes that showcase how military conflicts have shaped our nation and the cemetery. The show starts at 8:30 p.m., with a pre-show at 8 p.m., and is free and open to the public. There will be free parking and shuttle to the Memorial Amphitheater from the Welcome Center.

June 16: Arlington National Cemetery will host a wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The event starts at 9:00 a.m. and is free and open to the public.
An appropriate way to get to these events is to start at Rosslyn's Iwo Jima Memorial, walk by the Netherlands Carillon, and through the cemetary to the Memorial Amphitheater or the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.  That's about a twenty minute walk through poignant Rosslyn monuments of military service.  For persons with mobility difficulties, a webcast of the ceremonies will be available.

spectacular view from Rosslyn's Top of the Town

Last night's RAFOM Civic Association annual meeting was held at Rosslyn's Top of the Town.  The view from Top of the Town is the best view in the region.  From Top of the Town you can see the new line-up of the Brompton's condominiums, the full scope of the Riverplace Condominiums, and Rosslyn's alluring, curvaceous twin towers.  Notice also the extent of greenery.  Rosslyn may be a lot like Manhattan and San Francisco, but Rosslyn probably has more trees than either.

Senator Kaine wows huge crowd at RAFOM meeting

At the Radnor - Fort Myer Heights (RAFOM) Civic Association meeting this evening, Senator Tim Kaine talked about budget issues, defense issues, foreign policy issues, and broad issues of working together politically.  It was a masterful talk displaying impressive command of facts, clear thinking, and keen awareness of political feasibility.  Politicians like Senator Kaine and world-class local news sources are the best hope for Rosslyn and all of America.
This annual meeting was the 15-year anniversary of RAFOM. Senator Kaine congratulated RAFOM President Stan Karson, who has served as RAFOM President for all 15 years. Most of RAFOM's leadership has a similarly distinguished record of continual service.

The crowd at the meeting was large and appreciative. The official Ode Street Tribune estimate is that 117 persons attended the meeting. The crowd gave Senator Kaine a standing ovation at the end of his talk. Complete OST-TV coverage of the talk is below (not available through email delivery).

Democratic Congressional Primary this coming Tuesday

This Tuesday, June 10, is the primary for Democratic voters to choose a candidate for our area's representative in the U.S. House of Representatives.  Seven candidates remain in the race.  Three candidates have withdrawn, but their names remain on the ballot because there wasn't time to reprogram the voting machines.  Polling will take place in the regular Rosslyn polling locations: Firehouse 10 and Wilson School.  Vote!
For more information about the candidates, search for their websites or check out their statements on ARLnow.  The RAFOM annual meeting is the night before the election.  Expect to see candidates working the crowd among the influential Rosslyn electorate.  The Ode Street Tribune's election expect confidently predicts that the winner of this election will become our representative in Congress. Moreover, this highly regarded expert predicts that the candidate who shakes the most hands at the RAFOM meeting will be the winner.

Rosslyn white oak prevails against killer mushroom

A killer mushroom attack on the white oak at the corner of Nash St. and 14th in Rosslyn drew world-wide attention this past January.  Despite mushroom expert opinion that it was doomed, the Rosslyn tree stepped up to the challenge and put out a massive display of green leaves.  According to the Arlington County Forester, the tree does not appear to be in imminent danger.  The killer mushroom appears to be in remission.  Never under-estimate the fortitude and endurance of Rosslyn residents.

Rosslyn's Art Institute is presenting "Scenes to the Runway," a movie-themed fashion show, this Wednesday at 4pm at Artisphere.  Here are the movie-themed fashions:
“Skyfall” will feature suits, “Fast & Furious” will show off urban fashion, “American Hustle” will showcase fun and adventurous retro styles, “The Hunger Games” will feature futuristic garments, and “The Great Gatsby” will highlight the swanky and art deco details of the roaring 20s.
Admission is free.

Rosslyn's Art Institute will also be presenting on Wednesday the "Visually Wired" student film fest. One film screening will be from 11:40am to 1pm, and a second screening will be from 6pm to 7:30pm.  Both will be at Artisphere.  Admission is free.

In 2011, the "Visually Wired" film fest prompted a report of a horrific monster being chased out of Rosslyn.  If the "Visually Wired" film fest brings news of an alien invasion by Martians, rest assured that Rosslyn's famous Buffalo Soldiers will rise up and save the world.

Sunday's video

This week we are pleased to present a very special video: the Ode Street Tribune's blockbuster smash hit, "truck stuck."  That video has had over 200,000 (two hundred thousand) views.  It has made the Ode Street Tribune the world leader in reporting truck difficulties turning onto Marshall Dr. in Rosslyn.
