Rosslyn's Dark Star Park & Jerry Garcia -- REVEALED!

This Friday, August 1, is the 30th anniversary of Rosslyn's Dark Star Park.  This famous work of public art was the first public art installed in Arlington County.  To mark this important anniversary, Arlington County Board Chair Jay Fisette will officially proclaim “Dark Star Park Day” at a celebration starting this Friday at 9am at Rosslyn's Dark Star Park.  Rosslyn BID President Mary-Claire Burick, Congressman Jim Moran, developer Joey Kaempfer, and representatives of Arlington Public Art will also be at the event.  In addition, this Friday evening the Rosslyn BID will be screening the documentary Art in the Public Eye: The Making of Dark Star Park before the Rosslyn Outdoor Film Festival.
In the tradition of Rosslyn's key role in revealing the Watergate scandal, the Ode Street Tribune has decided to reveal that Dark Star Park links Rosslyn to the creativity of Grateful Dead bandleader Jerry Garcia.  Jerry Garcia's birthday is August 1.  Dark Star is a brilliant song that the Grateful Dead released in 1968.  The Tribune urges this Friday's celebration of Dark Star Park to include playing a recording of Dark Star at exactly 9:32am.
Let's go you and I.  Yes we can!

Tuesday night, Heavy Seas Alehouse packed

About 7pm this Tuesday night, Rosslyn's Heavy Seas Alehouse was rocking with a large crowd inside and a good number of patrons on deck in the sidewalk seating area.  Around the block, Piola Pizza and Cafe Asia were also hosting large crowds.
Right next door to Heavy Seas Alehouse will soon be a Spitfire Pizza.  That shop will offer custom pizza and salads, made to order in 90 seconds.

Downtown Rosslyn is becoming a destination location for evening socializing, every day of the week.

don't play hopscotch in the middle of Meade St. bridge

Recently a hopscotch course has been marked out on Rosslyn's Meade St. bridge.  Playing hopscotch in the middle of a busy road is crazy.  The Ode Street Tribune urges residents to enjoy themselves more safely in Rosslyn's magnificent Ft. Myer Heights Park.

free ballet exercise classes in Rosslyn's Gateway Park

Don't spend your summer regretting that you missed the Rosslyn Yoga Hikes this past June.  Look to the future!  In August on Tuesday nights from 6pm to 7pm, Lava Barre will be offering free, outdoor ballet exercise classes in Gateway Park.  Lava Barre soon will be opening a fitness boutique in Rosslyn.  So if you like the classes, you will have an opportunity to take more in the future.

Keep in mind that ballet training is not just for ballerinas.  This sort of training can help keep you moving through clouds at age 79.  It's also excellent for cyclists looking to build core strength, improve balance, and promote the ability to accelerate explosively in response to an attack.

Rosslyn's Central Place rises with artistic views

Eminent fine art photograph Frank Hallam Day has found fine art in Rosslyn.  That's not surprising to well-informed persons.  Day's monumental crape murtle mural has for months been creating sensations about Central Place.  Now Day's Rosslyn's series has circled Central Place. Walk around downtown Rosslyn and open your artistic eyes to the diverse shapes and colors.

new bike path to Rosslyn opening soon

The new bike path on the south side of Rt. 50 is rapidly making progress towards Rosslyn.  The Ode Street Tribune's Construction Forecasting Bureau estimates that the path will be open and fully functional in about a month.

Meanwhile, controversy continues to rage about how the new path will connect to the local Arlington Blvd.  Leftists believe that the path will be taken across the access ramp to continue on the left along the local Arlington Blvd. up to the stop sign at the Queen St. bridge.  Rightist believe that path will continue on Arlington Blvd. on the right side.  That would require shifting the road over towards the left and adding a curving connection to the existing local Arlington Blvd.  The Tribune urges leftists and rightists to set aside their bitter dispute and support whatever path position best serves Rosslyn.

Rosslyn wall offers inspiring quotes

The Rosslyn wall along the local Arlington Blvd on the south side of Rt. 50 between Ft. Myer Dr. and N. Nash St. has in recent weeks become a public forum chalked with inspiring quotes.  Passers-by have been uplifted with inspiration from Maya Angelou, Mark Twain, Paul of Tarsus, Andy Warhol, Michael Jordan, and the Ode Street Tribune.  The appearance of these quotes seems to be associated with the Twitter hashtag InspireArlington.  That hashtag is somewhat misleading.  Rosslyn offers inspiration not just for Arlington, but for the whole world.

antique wheelbarrow in Miracles window display

Rosslyn's Miracles hair salon has the finest window display in the mid-Atlantic region.  What makes Miracles window display so wonderful is that you never know what you'll see.  A few months ago, the window was displaying magnificent jade jewelry.  Now it holds an antique wheelbarrow and an antique sewing machine.

Unfortunately, Miracles apparently doesn't have an antique printing press.  Earlier this week, a malfunction in the Ode Street Tribune's printing press prevented the fully typeset Monday edition from being delivered to readers. Securing spare parts for the Tribune's press is very difficult. If you see an antique printing press in a display window or elsewhere for sale, please inform the Tribune's publisher.

windows missing in Rosslyn tower

Two windows are boarded up high on a Rosslyn building on the west side of Ft. Myer Dr., just before the Meade St. bridge.  These may be offices of employees who got demoted and had their window boarded up.  Rosslyn buildings give many office workers opportunities to have window offices with spectacular views.  But if you don't meet job performance standards, you may have your window boarded up.  That's more cost-effective than moving your office to the basement.

suspected killer mushrooms attack Westmoreland tree

Suspected killer mushrooms have emerged at the base of a majestic tree on the ground of the historically important Westmoreland Terrace Condominiums.  Many persons falsely believe that mushrooms are harmless if you don't eat them.  That's not true.  Mushrooms can kill trees.  These mushrooms and this tree should be watched carefully.

Not all mushrooms are evil, vicious killers. Mushrooms overall make an important contribution to lessening global warming.  But these mushrooms look suspicious.

historic marker in Rosslyn

A historic marker has been uncovered amid the grassy pedestrian path just east of the intersection of N. Meade St. and N. Marshall Dr. in Rosslyn.  The age of the marker is evident in the rough stone mixture of the concrete.  A single nail head on the top of the marker seems to have rusted blue, suggesting a copper or bronze nail.

As the earliest identified location in what became Arlington County, Rosslyn is filled with history.  The marker is about a half-mile from the Custis-Lee Mansion, constructed in 1802 and still standing in Rosslyn under the name Arlington House.  The marker is only about a quarter-mile from the historic Buffalo soldiers barracks.  The Ode Street Journal's investigative reporter speculates that the marker indicates a boundary of the Rosslyn property that William Henry Ross purchased in 1860.

Next time you want to enjoy a walk around historic Rosslyn, see if you can find this historic marker.

sand most popular play equipment in Rosslyn playground

Rosslyn's Ft. Myer Heights Park children's playground has some superb, state-of-the-art play equipment.  Kids definitely enjoy climbing on that equipment and sliding through it. Yet a lengthy, Ode Street Tribune study has revealed that the most popular play equipment in the playground is the sand pit.

Kids don't need fancy equipment to have fun.  Kids are creative enough to have a lot of fun with just sand.  Loose dirt probably would also be fun for kids if you can find some of that nearby.  Fortunately, by the time kids become adults, parents and schools have beaten the creativity out of them and prepared them for most jobs in the modern workforce.

Rosslyn mighty force on the Potomac

With Rosslyn's new 1813 Moore St. tower taking the position of a ship's bridge, Rosslyn's skyline looks like a mighty sailing vessel.  Not surprisingly, the U.S. Navy is facing increasing pressure to name a new ship the USS Rosslyn.  Popular sentiment favors a new Freedom-class littoral combat ship.  This ship is designed to be a "networked, agile, stealthy surface combatant capable of defeating anti-access and asymmetric threats in the littorals."  With networking, agility, and stealth, Rosslyn is not afraid to take on much large competitors around the world.
