don't miss Dosik's Cosplay and Dom Flemons at Rosslyn's Artisphere

You can see some great photographs of fans doing cosplay on Artisphere's video screens, but only through this Sunday, March 1. Cosplay involves dressing up as fictional characters that you love. Keep in mind, however, that real-world laws still apply.  Mike Dosik, a Rosslyn-area native, took these photographs through three years' attendance at fan conventions and fairs.

For an excellent Saturday double header, check out Dosik's cosplay photos and then attend the 8pm performance of Dom Flemons:
A multi-instrumentalist, Flemons plays his trademark banjo, guitar, harmonica, fife, bones, drums and quills in addition to singing. His work with the Carolina Chocolate Drops earned the group a Grammy Award for its 2011 album Genuine Negro Jig.
Tickets for Dom Flemons show are $18. Order yours in advance before the show sells out.

whatever it takes to get to Rosslyn

Amid last Saturday's fierce snowstorm, Aaron Wieczorek set out from Crystal City on a mountain bike. He made it to Rosslyn.

Arriving in Rosslyn in difficult conditions is one of those rare triumphs of a persevering spirit. No matter the conditions, dare to struggle to get to Rosslyn. Aaron achieved that victory. You can, too.

Rosslyn's relationship with the Netherlands is cracking

Rosslyn's Netherlands Carillon stands as a symbol of friendship between Rosslyn and the Netherlands. Unfortunately, the information plate describing that symbol is cracking badly.

Rosslyn has an outstanding cadre of purple-shirted ambassadors. Rosslyn's ambassadors should work with the Netherlands to smooth this important relationship.

Rosslyn mourns death of evergreen in winter wind

A majestic evergreen tree in Rosslyn Vista Park was tragically killed by the fierce winter winds that assailed Rosslyn this past weekend. When the evergreen fell to the ground, it caused serious injury to the neighboring tree. Twisted and amputated limps are strewn about the gruesome accident scene.

The Tribune does everything is can to protect and defend trees in Rosslyn. But it's tough to fight against the wind.

Rosslyn Safeway manager overnights in Rosslyn to ensure 6am store opening

Last night, with a major snowstorm threatening the Rosslyn region, Rosslyn Safeway's new manager decided to stay overnight in Rosslyn in a local hotel to ensure that the Rosslyn Safeway would be open and serving customers at 6am this morning. While other stores may offer fancy fresh, over-priced organic vegetables, Rosslyn's Safeway excels in the basics: being open and accessible in any circumstances. The Rosslyn Safeway has served the Rosslyn community loyally for decades. Rosslyn's Safeway deserves to be better rated. In times of crisis and desperation, you can count on the Rosslyn Safeway for all your grocery shopping needs.

In other Rosslyn news, all roads to Rosslyn are clear. Traffic is flowing smoothly into Rosslyn. As long as Rosslyn is functioning, there is nothing to fear.

spirit of Rosslyn cannot be frozen

With rumors blowing about of sub-zero wind chills in Rosslyn, remember that the fire at the heart of Rosslyn's spirit will give residents the warmth to prevail through any weather that may occur. Chill. It's not a question of whether. Rosslyn will prevail.

preserve art from legendary Fire Station 10

All five school board members apparently are planning to go forward with redevelopment of the historic Wilson School site in Rosslyn. Since that site includes Rosslyn's legendary Fire Station 10, the issue of art preservation urgently needs to be discussed.

The magnificent fire bench outside the fire station and the Pollock-school smoke alarm public message are external indications of the art talent associated with Fire Station 10. The Tribune believes that additional artistic treasurers are hidden within the aging fire station. If the old fire station is demolished, care must be taken to preserve the outstanding art of Rosslyn's legendary Fire Station 10.

silkworms to kimono in Elsabé Dixon's Live/Life

Elsabé Dixon's installation Live/Life, at Artisphere through February 22, represents well Rosslyn's dynamic interaction with the natural world. Ms. Dixon's installation cultivates domesticated silkworms into beautiful shapes and patterns. The silkworms produce silk and die. But like Rosslyn trees shedding their flower petals, that isn't the end. New buds will come. More silkworms will be born. Rosslyn residents continually make new creations with the natural world around them.
Ms. Dixon encourages visitors to appreciate the silkworms life cycle, the importance of human cultivation in the silkworm life cycle, and new works that can be created with the silkworms' work. An important form of human work from silk is clothing. The Japanese have a rich cultural heritage of silk garments called kimono. Like reading the signs of nature in the state of silkworms, various wrapping and designs of kimono speak about a wearer's place in her life and society.
This past Sunday afternoon, a group of women modeled silk kimonos within the installation space. The beauty of their dresses surely pleased the spirits of the silkworms represented in their physical remains and created patterns. The group's leader was Emmalee June Aman. She sells vintage Japanese kimono and other silk items. Making an authentic kimono requires the work of 10 to 30 highly skilled craftspersons, each of which spends 5 to ten years under a master to learn her or his skill. The items Ms. Aman has selected and imported are available for purchase through Etsy at very reasonable prices. Get some silk and fold it and wrap it into your life.

Elsabé Dixon has open studio hours in her installation in the Artist in Residence Studio in Rosslyn's Artisphere: Thursday and Friday, 6-10pm, and Sunday, noon to 5pm. If you don't appreciate the wonder of silk, you will after experiencing this installation and talking with Elsabé Dixon.

Update:  Ms. Aman has kindly supplied some corrections. The Tribune's journalist regrets that he lacks expertise in kimonos. Ms. Aman stated:
It is my hope to share & spread a love of kimono as sustainable, wearable art with others in the USA, in a way which respects the garments, the artisans who made them, & the tradition from which they were born.

Rosslyn power network being strengthened

Traffic was being diverted to one lane at the Wilson Blvd. underpass of Ft. Myer Dr. this evening. The diversion was for the purpose of strengthening Rosslyn electrical feeder lines.

Pepco recently sold the power station at the nearby corner to Dominion Power. Dominion Power, recognizing Rosslyn's importance to the regional economy, is renovating the power feeder lines.

Every time you turn on a light, be grateful for the complex web of infrastructure that keeps Rosslyn humming.

Manual Cinema's Lula Del Ray at Artisphere this Fri-Sat

A fantastic work of hand-crafted media will be at Rosslyn's Artisphere this Friday and Saturday nights. The acclaimed theatrical troupe Manuel Cinema uses overhead projectors, paper puppets, actors in silhouette and a live band to create a much richer, more emotive experience than ordinary cinema. Manual Cinema will be performing Lula Del Ray:
Lula del Ray is a mythic reinvention of the classic coming-of-age story. Told almost entirely without dialogue, Lula del Ray tells the tale of a lonely adolescent girl who lives with her mother in a mid-century American Southwest setting. After a chance encounter over the radio, Lula becomes obsessed with the country music duo the Baden Brothers. Inspired by their music, she runs away from home and encounters a world of danger, deception, and disappointment along the way.
Manual Cinema's Lula del Ray evokes Rosslyn with airplanes over a majestic cityscape and the satellite dishes of international corporate media. Yet Manual Cinema, with its carefully handcrafted performance, also calls to mind the uniqueness and poignancy of a traditional local news source. Performances of this handcrafted cinema are at 8pm Friday and Saturday nights. Tickets are $20. Treat yourself to a fantastic sensory experience!

demolished guardrail validates Tribune concern about directions to Rosslyn

The most important traffic information for drivers on Route 50 and all other roads is how to get into Rosslyn. Take a look at the destroyed guardrail on Rt. 50 just past an easily missed entrance ramp going directly to downtown Rosslyn.

A driver evidently panicked at having passed that Rosslyn entrance ramp. The driver then plowed over the guardrail to get on the adjacent local road to drive back to downtown Rosslyn. Such action is understandable. It wouldn't be necessary if the digital traffic sign displayed relevant Rosslyn information.
