Rosslyn Safeway has oyster mushrooms

Rosslyn's mysterious and intriguing underground Safeway is now selling oyster mushrooms.  Don't just eat iceberg lettuce.  Branch out into more exotic vegetables.  Oyster mushrooms taste great sauteed in olive oil in a cast-iron pan.

It is wonderful that the Ode Street Tribune is calling its many readers attention to the fact that some special mushrooms are available. However, the Ode Street Tribune needs to point out to its readers that that there are a wide variety of mushrooms that are colloquially called "Oyster Mushrooms". Most "Oyster" mushroom belong to the genus Pleurotus. However, the Pleurotus genus includes dozens of species. The Pleurotus ostreatus is a widely eaten species of Pleurotus.

However, as noted by mushroomexpert.com "the broad term Oyster Mushroom" applies equally to Pleurotus ostreatus, Pleurotus pulmonarius, and Pleurotus populinus.

As noted in www.tanelorn.us/data/mycology "It is unfortunate that such a wonderful, tasty mushroom has so many inedible, sickening lookalikes."

the blog curbsonevalley.com "The Mock Oyster was once placed in the genus Pleurotus, the true edible oyster mushrooms, and it is a convincing look-alike. Don’t be fooled though, this species may be non-toxic, but Phyllotopsis nidulans is distinctly lacking in culinary value."

Before your readers buy what is being sold as "Oyster Mushrooms", they need to know what they are purchasing. Are the mushrooms being sold under the name Oyster mushrooms in fact the delicious Pleurotus ostreatus or are they one of the other less desirable species that are also called Oyster Mushrooms

The Ode Street Tribune needs take some action to see that these mushrooms are correctly labeled.

The mushrooms taste like Pleurotus ostreatus to me. As for correct labeling, the Tribune's Editorial Board feels it's more important to keep the pressure on Shady Brook Farms' turkey chops.

It is surprising and dangerous that you eat before you ID a mushroom. People using that technique will never be able to tell others that they have IDed a deadly mushroom.
